Let me introduce myself . . . my name is Sonja Baker & I am known by many as being unstoppable because I am always on the go!
I like to participate and take on anything that I know that I can do to help others to make life much easier for them. I am well-versed with the challenges that come with having a life-altering disability, but I don’t let that stop me from living my life!
I attended the University of Northern Colorado and received a BA degree in Special Education and minored in Reading. I became an advocate for myself as I got older because I knew that I would have to advocate for myself if I wanted to go to college and live on my own and be able to drive and work on my own. I was dedicated to attending the National Spina Bifida conferences to learn about the new medical research that is updated yearly.
In the past few months I have learned about how to work with the legislation to keep medicaid for the handicapped on a national level and on the state level of the Spina Bifida Association. Recently I have taken the initiative to create an Advocacy Group [Canon City Advocates] for those with disabilities – and daily work to establish lasting connections that add momentum to my pursuit.
Spina bifida is not only an ongoing challenge – but an opportunity – as I am dedicated to helping others to create solutions out of any struggle. I am known to the community as a problem solver, who really knows how to create a workable plan. I am highly responsive, and know how to take action & encourage others to develop their interests and personal talents! I am a mentor for kids and adults, and I offer sponsorship advice for universal success.
